This workshop will be at an advanced level and will help you with the tips and tricks of tendon management. It will assist with clinical reasoning of complex tendon injuries in the hand and wrist. We will discuss what you know about tendons, what you don’t know about tendons and what you think you know in a relaxed format. We will look at the anatomy, biomechanics and healing. 

The workshop is aimed at a medium to advanced level. It will take an in depth look at all tendon injuries including but not limited to, mallet, central slip, long finger flexors, zone 5 extensors and wrist tendons. We will examine mechanism of injury, differential diagnoses, their assessment and management.


WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is suitable for Hand Therapists, Physiotherapists, Sports Physicians and Occupational Therapists working in hospitals, private practice or community settings treating and assessing upper limb fractures. An understanding of hand anatomy will be assumed.

BEN CUNNINGHAM

Ben Cunningham is currently the hand therapist at the Melbourne Football Club (AFL) and the director of Action Rehab. Ben has over 17 years’ experience providing hand and upper limb therapy, including three years working in the United Kingdom at the Queen Victoria Hospital and eight years as the senior clinician at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Since graduation in 1996 Ben has been working in the specialist area of Hand Therapy and completed a postgraduate Masters of Clinical Science (Hand & Upper Limb) through Curtin University in 2006. Ben is currently a Lecturer at Monash University where he has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiotherapy students.

Ben is a full member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) and has served as the divisional representative for Victoria on the management committee. Ben is the author of the Hand Trauma and Fundamentals of Hand Therapy workshops run through the AHTA and has presented on these locally and interstate. Ben has taught both here in Australia and overseas on the specialist area of hand trauma.

Through his role at Melbourne Football Club and Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre Ben has treated a wide variety of sports related hand, wrist and elbow trauma. Ben has led the way in the treatment of complex intra-articular fractures in the wrist, hand, thumb and digits, presenting at national and international conferences. Ben is an expert in wrist injury and has worked with athletes restoring wrist core stability allowing them to return to sport sooner than expected. 


WORKSHOP OUTLINE
The following conditions and their pathology will be discussed:
  • Mallet Finger
  • Jersey Finger
  • Early motion for Zone 1 and 2 Flexor Tendons ( including the Manchester Short Splint)
  • Central Slip injury closed and open
  • Zone 5 extensor Tendon Protocols
  • Wrist and Musculotendinous Tendon injuries
Discussion will include:
  • Common causes
  • Splinting and treatment
  • Misconceptions
  • Healing rates/factors affecting healing
  • Complications
  • Tips and Tricks
