This workshop will assist with clinical reasoning of elbow injuries and pathology. We will discuss fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries and conditions of the elbow. We will examine the mechanism of injury, the anatomy, biomechanics and healing of common elbow pathologies.

This workshop will assist with clinical reasoning of elbow injuries and pathology.  We will discuss fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries and conditions of the elbow. We will examine the mechanism of injury, the anatomy, biomechanics and healing of common elbow pathologies. 

It will take an in depth look at a broad range of elbow conditions, including but not limited to, fractures and dislocations of the elbow, throwers elbow, lateral epicondylagia (tennis elbow), radial head injuries and golfers elbow. Splinting, exercise and taping for the conditions will be demonstrated.  X-rays, CT and MRI relevant to the conditions will be read and interpreted in an interactive and open discussion.


WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is suitable for Physiotherapists,  Hand Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Sports Physicians working in hospitals, private practice or community settings treating and assessing elbow conditions. This workshop is aimed at a medium to advanced level and an understanding of elbow anatomy will be assumed.

BEN CUNNINGHAM

Ben Cunningham is currently the hand therapist at the Melbourne Football Club (AFL) and the director of Action Rehab. Ben has over 17 years’ experience providing hand and upper limb therapy, including three years working in the United Kingdom at the Queen Victoria Hospital and eight years as the senior clinician at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Since graduation in 1996 Ben has been working in the specialist area of Hand Therapy and completed a postgraduate Masters of Clinical Science (Hand & Upper Limb) through Curtin University in 2006. Ben is currently a Lecturer at Monash University where he has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiotherapy students.

Ben is a full member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) and has served as the divisional representative for Victoria on the management committee. Ben is the author of the Hand Trauma and Fundamentals of Hand Therapy workshops run through the AHTA and has presented on these locally and interstate. Ben has taught both here in Australia and overseas on the specialist area of hand trauma.

Through his role at Melbourne Football Club and Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre Ben has treated a wide variety of sports related hand, wrist and elbow trauma. Ben has led the way in the treatment of complex intra-articular fractures in the wrist, hand, thumb and digits, presenting at national and international conferences. Ben is an expert in wrist injury and has worked with athletes restoring wrist core stability allowing them to return to sport sooner than expected. 


WORKSHOP OUTLINE
The following conditions and their pathology/treatment will be discussed:
  • Terrible triad fractures/disloactions
  • Lateral epicondylagia (Tennis elbow)
  • Radial head fractures and replacement
  • Golfers elbow and Ulnar nerve pathology
  • Throwers elbow
  • MCL instability
  • LCL injuries of the elbow
Discussion will include:
  • Common causes
  • Splinting, taping, strengthening and treatment
  • Misconceptions
  • Healing rates/Factors affecting healing
  • Complications
  • We will discuss and analyse, splints, taping, CT’s and x-rays that will help therapists to identify these conditions through their pathology.
